Verse of the Day 9/5

Verse of the Day 9/5

Luke 13:12-13   When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your disability." 13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Last week we considered how Jesus "saw" Matthew, took notice of him while he as sitting at his tax booth.  Jesus then called him to follow Him and in doing so,  Matthews life would be changed forever.  In today's passage Jesus sees another person, this time  a woman who had been battling a physical ailment which had also become an emotional ailment and a spiritual ailment, for 18 years.

In the process of His teaching the disciples and the Pharisees He took notice of this woman and healed her.  The verse says that Jesus saw her, called her over, freed her from her disability and personally laid His hands on her to heal her physically.

There can be physical disabilities or ailments to our bodies that can drain us and give us a "disabling" spirit.  The disabling can be physical, emotional, or spiritual or all three.  But as with the woman in today's passage, Jesus has the power to free people today from those bonds.  Jesus sees us.  Jesus calls us and Jesus has the ability to heal us.

A.W. Tozer writes, "The mercy of God is not  a passive thing; it is an active thing.  God is compassionate, but He is actively compassionate."  He still lays His hands on people, "touches" people today.

I'm reminded of the Bill Gaither song "He Touched Me".  It speaks of being "shackled by a heavy burden".  The woman in today's passage had been "shackled" and He set her free, no longer to be the same.

Shackled by a heavy burden,
'Neath a load of guilt and shame
Then the hand of Jesus touched me,
And now I am no longer the same

He touched me, oh He touched me,
And oh the joy that floods my soul!
Something happened and now I know,
He touched me and made me whole

Blessings,

Luke 13:10-16 The Message (MSG)

Healing on the Sabbath

10-13 He was teaching in one of the meeting places on the Sabbath. There was a woman present, so twisted and bent over with arthritis that she couldn't even look up. She had been afflicted with this for eighteen years. When Jesus saw her, he called her over. "Woman, you're free!" He laid hands on her and suddenly she was standing straight and tall, giving glory to God.
14 The meeting-place president, furious because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the congregation, "Six days have been defined as work days. Come on one of the six if you want to be healed, but not on the seventh, the Sabbath."
15-16 But Jesus shot back, "You frauds! Each Sabbath every one of you regularly unties your cow or donkey from its stall, leads it out for water, and thinks nothing of it. So why isn't it all right for me to untie this daughter of Abraham and lead her from the stall where Satan has had her tied these eighteen years?"
