Verse of the Day 10/5

Verse of the Day 10/5

John 8:31-32 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."    English Standard Version (ESV)

I read the following in today's Turning Point devotional from David Jeremiah, he writes, "When you change news channels, you change worldviews. Journalism is now so opinionated that the same story, reported by two different broadcasters, sounds like totally different events. We switch stations and ask, "Are these people on the same planet? What happened to objective news? How do we know what to believe?"

How true that is.  You turn into one network and hear what you think is the news, the truth, only to turn to another network and hear just about the exact opposite.  How can we know what to believe?  But when it comes to our lives and what we are to do, when we hear differing opinions regarding what we should do in certain situations, we are to seek the Lord, recall His Word and let it guide our thoughts and actions.

In yesterday's passage we considered how we are to "consider our ways".  In doing so, the first step, the first thoughts are to consider them in relation to God's Word.  When we do, when we rely on the principals set forth by Jesus, throughout the New Testament and encapsulated in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapters 5- 7, we can know the truth and the truth can set us free, freeing our minds from worry and doubt.  We can know the truth.

John 8:31-38 The Message (MSG)

If the Son Sets You Free

31-32 Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. "If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you."

33 Surprised, they said, "But we're descendants of Abraham. We've never been slaves to anyone. How can you say, 'The truth will free you'?"

34-38 Jesus said, "I tell you most solemnly that anyone who chooses a life of sin is trapped in a dead-end life and is, in fact, a slave. A slave is a transient, who can't come and go at will. The Son, though, has an established position, the run of the house. So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through. I know you are Abraham's descendants. But I also know that you are trying to kill me because my message hasn't yet penetrated your thick skulls. I'm talking about things I have seen while keeping company with the Father, and you just go on doing what you have heard from your father."
