Verse of the Day 2/20

Verse of the Day 2/20

Colossians 3:2-3   Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  New King James Version (NKJV)

We are a few weeks from spring and here in the southeast U.S. the sun is growing stronger and you can feel that spring is getting closer and baseball is just around the corner.  Baseball players, especially this year, are looking forward to a new season, not just going through the motions but focusing on putting last year behind.  There will be a focus on getting back to where they used to or need to be and going through a physical regimen to get them in the best shape for a new season with more fans in the stands and the baseball life being "closer" to what it normally is.

As Christians, many of us have faced challenging years as well.  Our "spiritual armor" may have been challenged and tested by the Coronavirus and all of the  changes that have come to our lives as a result of it.  We to are looking forward to better days and our focus needs to get back to the things that have made us better and stronger in the past.  Spiritually, that means spending more time in His Word and in prayer and spending less time focusing on the "things on the earth" as stated above.

For many years I've read through the New Testament rotating which translation that I use for most of my reading.  I use the English Standard Version and the New King James Version as my reference versions just to make comparisons.  I like doing this because certain words catch my eye and often remind me of a certain hymn, contemporary Christian song or even a quote from a Christian author.  Today as I read this verse from the NKJV the words "not on things of earth" caught my attention and reminded me of the hymn Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.

O soul are you weary and troubled
No light in the darkness you see
There's light for a look at the Savior
And life more abundant and free
Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there
Over us sin no more hath dominion
For more than conquerors we are
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace

Colossians 3:1-11 English Standard Version (ESV)

Put On the New Self

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your[a] life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:[b] sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming.[c] In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self[d] with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,[e] free; but Christ is all, and in all.
