Verse of the Day 3/30

Verse of the Day 3/30

Psalm 8:3-4
New King James Version

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?

In Monday's post we considered how God asked Elijah "what are you doing here?" as he was hiding in a cave. I'm reminded how God also called out to Adam and Eve in the garden after they had sinned and tried to hide from God, when the Lord said "Where are you?".  They couldn't hide from God no matter where they should go.  But the important thing to notice is that it is God who initiates the contact, calls out to them and in doing so draws them to Himself and causes them to evaluate their circumstances and their need of Him.

Very early this morning I woke up in the middle of the night and these verses came to my. mind.  It may have been due to the fact that I knew that they'd be coming up in my reading this morning, but I felt as if God were calling to me, He was being mindful of me.  I felt that I should be praying but not sure of what specifically, but a prayed for a while and felt better for it.

Yesterday, Jean and I had a walk along the ocean beach and the pier that ran out into the ocean.  We saw dolphins coming out of the water.  We looked down and saw schools of bait fish under the pier.  We saw the sea and the waves, we saw the sun and a bright blue sky and we saw children "creating" castles in the sand and swimming in the ocean.  The psalm reminds us that even with the majesty and glory of all of His creation, He is still mindful of us and we should be mindful of Him.  He is the one who draws us to Himself "and keeps us cleaving", keeps us holding on.

Pastor John Piper writes, "It is a great and wonderful truth of Scripture that God is faithful and will keep forever those whom he has called. Our confidence that we are eternally secure is a confidence that God will do whatever is necessary to "keep us trusting!"

The certainty of eternity is no greater than the certainty God will keep us trusting now. But that certainty is very great for all whom God has called."

"[The Lord] will sustain you (keep you) to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord" (1 Corinthians 1:8–9).

The thought of God keeping us and sustaining us reminded me of the old hymn "Praise the Savior".

Praise the Savior, ye who know Him!
Who can tell how much we owe Him?
Gladly let us render to Him
  All we are and have.

Jesus is the name that charms us;
He for conflicts fits and arms us;
Nothing moves and nothing harms us
  When we trust in Him.

Trust in Him, ye saints, forever;
He is faithful, changing never;
Neither force nor guile can sever
  Those He loves from Him.

Keep us, Lord, oh, keep us cleaving
To Thyself and still believing,
Till the hour of Thy receiving
  The victorious Bride.

Then we shall be where we would be;
Then we shall be what we should be;
Things which are not now, nor could be,
  Then shall be our own.

I said earlier that I didn't know what or who I was to be praying for this morning.  So among those I prayed for I prayed for you and all who would be reading this today that they may know that God is calling out to you and is mindful of you.

Blessings,
Mike

Psalm 8
New King James Version

The Glory of the Lord in Creation

To the Chief Musician. [a]On the instrument of Gath. A Psalm of David.

Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!

Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have [b]ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit[c] him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
