Verse of the Day 9/4

Verse of the Day 9/4

Isaiah 40:30-31
English Standard Version

30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.

Today's verses came up in my daily Old Testament reading.  Isaiah 40 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible, right up there with Romans 8 and Hebrews 11 for several reasons, one of them being that they pick me up when I'm feeling weary or exhausted by the trials of life.

This week I had the privilege to go on a nature hike with my wife and two of my grandchildren.  As seniors we often wish we could have the energy and exuberance of young grandchildren. Back to the walks that we took.  Towards the end of one walk, Jack, our youngest grandchild (7), asked if I could pick him up.  I picked him up and put him on my shoulders and we went along.  When I didn't think that I could carry him much further I put him back down and Jack took off. He had gotten his breather and his strength was renewed.  Mine would come later.

It's a good lesson for us.  All of us at times will feel weary, run down, or exhausted for one reason or another.  But when we wait on, when we put our faith in God, trust in Him, He will restores. We don't know His methods, often He'll use friends, family or even strangers to come along and pick us up, but behind it all it is the power of God, the Creator of the universe doing His work in His people to accomplish His purposes.

I know that I've quoted this Jeremy Camp song recently, but I thought that it was fitting for today's post as well.

The same power that rose Jesus from the grave
The same power that commands the dead to wake
Lives in us, lives in us
The same power that moves mountains when He speaks
The same power that can calm a raging sea
Lives in us, lives in us
He lives in us, lives in us

We have hope
That His promises are true
In His strength
There is nothing we can't do
Yes, we know
There are greater things in store
We will not be overtaken
We will not be overcome

Blessings,
Mike

Isaiah 40:26-31
English Standard Version

26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
    who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
    calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
    and because he is strong in power,
    not one is missing.

27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
    and speak, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the Lord,
    and my right is disregarded by my God"?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.
