Verse of the Day 3/3

Through the Bible - Exodus 34-35, James 3

Good morning,
Over the past couple of days we've considered how God's Word is living and active (Heb. 4:12) and how our faith is to be living and active (James 2:22).
For today's verse we'll go to the Old Testament book of Proverbs to a few verses that tie these things together.

Proverbs 6:21-22 (English Standard Version) Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will lead you;
    when you lie down, they will watch over you;
   and when you awake, they will talk with you.
Does God's Word guide you, does it watch over you, giving you peace even amidst the turmoil and cares of life?  Is God's Word on your mind when you wake up and lead you in the way you should go for the day?

John MacArthur writes, "walk...lie down... awake.... this paralells the circumstances in Deuteronomy 6:6-9 for which wisdom provides direction, protection and meditation."  The passage in Deuteronomy is known as the Shema (the Hebrew word for hear) has become the Jewish confession of faith.  The words were to be repeated twice a day by devout Jews so that God's words would be on their minds and in their hearts, guiding them in their lives.

We'll close with a few verses from today's New Testament reading in James 3.  May we hear God's word, His instruction and guidance, and may this describe our hearts and actions today, sewn in peace.

James 3:17-18 (English Standard Version) But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Blessings,
Mike

Proverbs 6:20-23 (New Living Translation)

 20 My son, obey your father's commands,
      and don't neglect your mother's instruction.
 21 Keep their words always in your heart.
      Tie them around your neck.
 22 When you walk, their counsel will lead you.
      When you sleep, they will protect you.
      When you wake up, they will advise you.
 23 For their command is a lamp
      and their instruction a light;
   their corrective discipline
      is the way to life.
