Reading Romans 6:23 always brings to my mind Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". Some have commented that the "falling short" is missing the mark. If we try to reach God, to earn salvation on our own we will fail, we will fall short and miss the mark, and whether we realize it or not will be slaves to sin, to vanity and pride. Romans 3:23 and 6:23 were both verses that were part of the 4 Spiritual Laws tracts that was developed by Bill Bright and Campus Crusade for Christ which is still being used as an evangelization "tool' to reach others for Christ. Along with John 3:16 "for God so loved the world" and Romans 5:8 "while we were still sinners Christ died for us", these verses give a compelling reason to turn to Jesus.
We've been slaves to sin and, without God's gift, without Jesus Christ, we are earning, and headed for our own destruction. I love the way that today's verses begin, in virtually every translation that I looked up they say "but now". No matter what are struggles are or have been there is an alternative. A power to draw from beyond ourselves. It comes from God through Jesus, through His death and resurrection, He proved that He had conquered sin and death and offers the same to us.
Are you struggling now? You can be free, there's power in the blood.
