Verse of the Day 12/3

Psalm 18:27-28  For you save a humble people,
    but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28
For it is you who light my lamp;
    the Lord my God lightens my darkness.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Today's verses were part of my Old Testament devotional reading for the day.  Reading them brought me back to yesterday's verse in James where we were called to "humble yourselves before the Lord".  We also considered that "humbling yourself is hard work. It is not something you think, it is a do thing."  Today's verses should encourage us in that if we do humble ourselves, if we do submit to God's will, He will guide us, He will shine His light in our life and down our path.

 My New Testament read through the Bible passage for today was from 1 John 1 where we read:

1 John 1:9-10 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say, "We don't have any sin," we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Being humble involves admitting and submitting.  Admitting that we are sinners and that we need God and submitting to what He would have us do.  Whether it is in the Old Testament or the New, the message is clear - going back to James 4:6 -But the grace that God gives is even stronger. As the scripture says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."Good News Translation (GNT)

Proverbs 3:34 New Living Translation (NLT) The Lord mocks the mockers
    but is gracious to the humble.

David shows us what this all looks like in Psalm 51 where he repents of his sin and submits to God:

Psalm 51:17 English Standard Version (ESV)  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

What is the condition of our heart today.  Is it proud, or broken and contrite - humble?

In Christ,
Mike

Psalm 18:27-30The Message (MSG)

25-27 The good people taste your goodness,
The whole people taste your health,
The true people taste your truth,
The bad ones can't figure you out.
You take the side of the down-and-out,
But the stuck-up you take down a peg.

28-29 Suddenly, God, you floodlight my life;
    I'm blazing with glory, God's glory!
I smash the bands of marauders,
    I vault the highest fences.

30 What a God! His road
    stretches straight and smooth.
Every God-direction is road-tested.
    Everyone who runs toward him
Makes it.
