Verse of the Day 5/25

Verse of the Day 5/25

Colossians 3:16-17   Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.   English Standard Version (ESV)

In yesterday's post from Psalm 119 we considered the importance of God's Word, reading and meditating on it during the day and as Spurgeon wrote that from it we may learn " what to believe, what to be, and what to do".  It ties in with today's verses written by the Apostle Paul, it starts with "letting" the word dwell in you.  Take it in, meditate on it, allow it to do it's work in you.  When you do so it will come out in your actions, whether it be giving thanks, or singing praises and having an attitude that spills over into the things that you do, "whatever you do in word or deed".

Verse 17 tells us "do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus".  John MacArthur writes, "this simply means to act consistently with who he is and what he wants".  The Christian life is often referred to as a "walk", walking with God and with other Christians, in harmony and honoring God.

As you head  out for the day and this holiday weekend, let God's Word dwell in you, think about it, may it guide you in your actions and interactions with others whether at work, at play or in worship.

Colossians 3:12-14 The Message (MSG)

12-14 So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

Colossians 3:12-17 The Message (MSG)

12-14 So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

15-17 Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
