Verse of the Day 8/12

Verse of the Day 8/12

Proverbs 1:32-33   For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,

    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
    and be at ease, without fear of harm."    New International Version (NIV)

Each day in my devotions I read a portion of the book of Proverbs.  I just started going through it again and I read today's verses this morning.  Reading these verses and those posted below after considering yesterday's post about submitting to the authorities was quite sobering.  How many people have been tempted and fooled into going along with those who tell them "we will all share in the loot" (Proverbs 1:14 below).

John MacArthur writes "This is the enlisting of the innocent without full disclosure of the intent.  Abundant spoil is promised by this outright robbery, which is made to appear easy and safe for the thieves."  There are many dangers and snares awaiting for those who go along with the crowd in hopes of "easy money".  History has shown that it doesn't work that way and that it won't go well for those who go along with the crowd.  Once someone goes down that road whether it be looting or dealing drugs, they will be forever be looking over their shoulder and most likely carry a load of guilt with it.  It seems that no one is willing to tell them of the consequences, short and long term, for their actions.

The flipside is given in verse 33 above, "whoever listens to me" said by King Solomon in this instance but can also be applied to God in and through His Word will not have to worry about "looking over their shoulder", they will have a clear conscience and be "at ease, without fear or harm".

Perhaps you'll have the opportunity to talk about these events with others.  If so, remember today's verses and passage along with yesterday's passage from 1 Peter where we were called to "Honor all people.  Love the brotherhood.  Fear God.  Honor the king."  (1 Peter 2:17 New King James Version)

Proverbs 1:10-16 New International Version (NIV)

10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
    do not give in to them.
11 If they say, "Come along with us;
    let's lie in wait for innocent blood,
    let's ambush some harmless soul;
12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
    and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
    we will all share the loot"—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
    they are swift to shed blood.

Proverbs 1:32-33 New International Version (NIV)

32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
    and be at ease, without fear of harm."
