Verse of the Day 11/10

Verse of the Day 11/10

Colossians 1:16-17  Everything was created by him,
everything in heaven
    and on earth,
everything seen and unseen,
including all forces
    and powers,
and all rulers
    and authorities.
All things were created
    by God's Son,
and everything was made
    for him.

17 God's Son was before all else,
and by him everything
is held together.  Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Our men's Bible study group recently began a study in the book of Colossians and we go there for today's verse.  Paul and the church were battling falsehoods and the purpose in the letter and in the passage were to point out the supremacy and the authority of Jesus Christ.  Today's verses bring us back to Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 which both talk about "the beginning", when God created all things.  Jesus was there in the beginning and in fact as verse 16 states all things were created by Him.  The battle going on had to do with what happened after creation.  Some then and now acknowledge the belief in a Creator, but feel that he created and then just stepped back and let things go.

The focus for today comes from verse 17 which states that "by him everything is held together".  He is personally and intimately involved in our lives and in the events of the world every second; every minute and every hour of every day.  Step back and think what it means to you that He is holding everything in the universe together.  Thoughts of Psalm 8 and "what is man that you are mindful of him" come to mind.

Some days we feel that things are going wrong, we feel like "the wheels are coming off" and we're about to crash.  It is in these times that we have to remember that even though we do not see Him,  He is there holding your life together and to put your faith and trust in Him.  The Creator of the world is there, if you believe and trust in Him, He is in you, holding you together.

In our study our men's group watched a video from Louie Giglio on this passage where he shared the story of a conversation that he had with a micro biologist.  Louie shared how he did not know how to draw the passage together with a final "punch".  The micro biologist suggested "laminin".  It is a protein based molecule that holds blood together.  It is a basic building block that holds blood cells together.  The diagram is in the shape of a cross.

Jesus was there when the world was created.  He came to earth and lived among us (John 1:14), He suffered and died on the cross for us.  His shed blood gives us a way to receive forgiveness and we too may be raised on the last day to be with Him forever.  Jesus holds it all together.  Check out one of Louie's videos on the subject on Youtube.

Realize that you are being held together today.

Colossians 1:12-18 English Standard Version (ESV)

12 giving thanks[a] to the Father, who has qualified you[b] to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Preeminence of Christ

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by[c] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
