Verse of the Day 11/4

Verse of the Day 11/4

Hebrews 2:1We must give our full attention to what we were told, so that we won't drift away.  Contemporary English Version (CEV)

Today's verse came up in the New Testament reading plan that I follow.  It is a verse that I post at least once a year because we need the reminder because we are "prone to wander", prone to drift.  It doesn't take any effort.

Water parks have grown in popularity in recent years and one feature that has been popping up in many of these parks is the "lazy river".  A channel is cut through the water park, filled with water and it flows through the whole park.  All a person has to do is to hop on a tube, sit back, and relax.  They will drift along and they can hop off at any time, at any place in the park.  If they do nothing at all, the course of the river will bring them back to the exact place that they got on.

Unfortunately, it is not that way in life; especially in our spiritual life.  If we allow ourselves to drift, we will likely find ourselves far from the will of God and getting back to where we started will be difficult, if not impossible to do.

Pastor and author John Piper writes, "there is no standing still. The life of this world is not a lake. It is a river. And it is flowing downward to destruction. If you do not listen earnestly to Jesus and consider him daily and fix your eyes on him hourly, then you will not stand still; you will go backward. You will float away from Christ... So we warn each other: Don't drift away. Don't love the world. Don't start thinking nothing huge is at stake. Fear the terrible prospect of not cherishing the promises of God above the promises of sin."

Have you been drifting?  Do you need to make your way back to God? Get off the tube and turn to God and His word.  Read the passage below.  Drifting in the spiritual life is neglecting what we should be doing, how we should be living.

Hebrews 2:1-4 English Standard Version (ESV)

Warning Against Neglecting Salvation

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
