Verse of the Day 6/18

Verse of the Day 6/18

Psalm 46:10 "Stop your fighting—and know that I am God,

exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth."  Holman Christian Standard Bible

Today's verse is probably familiar to most of us, likely from a different translation.  You have often heard it as "be still and know that I am God".  There is nothing wrong with that, however, it does come across as being quite tranquil.  I've heard R.C. Sproul say that in reality it should be more along the lines of "shut up" or "listen to me" like a parent scolding a stubborn child.

The Holman Christian Standard Bible says "stop your fighting".  That is appropriate in today's society at large, in politics and even in Christian circles.  There is almost no end of fighting and bickering going.  Back and forth all the time while trying to move forth an agenda.  The verse calls its reader, then and now, to stop all of this and pay attention to God.  Listen to what He has to say to us from His Word and through the Holy Spirit, to give Him the respect that is due to the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

We would like to tell politicians and even church leaders to head this advice and try to get along.  Step back from the fray and focus on what is truly good, not today's agenda.  As always, while we hope and pray for this, take a look at our selves and our own attitudes.  Selah.  Stop and think calmly about that and see how we may exalt Him in our actions and dealings with others today.

"The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge".  Selah Psalm 46:7.

Jacob is the one who wrestled with God and afterwards God gave him the name Israel.

Psalm 46:7-11
New King James Version

The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
