Verse of the Day 1/15

Verse of the Day 1/15

Matthew 7:24-25
New International Version

24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

One of the first songs that I remember learning as a child in Sunday School was based on today's verses,  Along with "Deep and Wide", "The Wise Man Built His House Upon the Rock" was done with "motions". It was easier to learn and remember when you put it in motion.  So it is with our faith, when we take what we've learned in word or song and put it into motion in our lives.  We didn't understand it fully, but as we've grown, we know that in this life storms and floods will come into our lives and we are best prepared by building our house upon the Rock.  The Word of God and faith in the person of Jesus Christ.

I remembrer watching a video series by Ray Vander Laan, "The Dust of the Rabbi".  He went through this passage in Israel and the illustration was in a dry river bed.  The surrounding area was rocky but the river bed was full of sand wahed from the rocks and the desert.  It would have been easy to dig and build in the sand, but if you've ever been in a desert and seen the culverts that have been build to divert water when it rains, you know that those dry creek beds become raging torrents and anything sitting in them will be washed about.  The rocks to build upon would be above the river bed beyond the reach of the floods and the footing would be soliid.

Pastor Greg Laurie writes, "We all will face storms in life as followers of Jesus. So make sure you build on the right foundation of a relationship with Jesus and God's Word. Don't build your faith on experience or fickle emotions......How important is the Word of God in our lives? Success or failure in the Christian life depends on how much of God's Word you get into your life on a regular basis and how obedient you are to it.    The Word of God restores us. It refreshes us. It transforms us. Build your life as a Christian on Christ and His Word."

On what or whom have you built your foundation?  The wise person has built his house on the Rock.

Blessings,
Mike

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."
