Verse of the Day 1/5

Verse of the Day 1/5

Matthew 5:13-14
English Standard Version

13 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

In Matthew 5 Jesus begins His famous Sermon on the Mount and He quickly gets down to the basics, first with the Beatitudes and then to today's subject of His followers being "salt and light:. We all need salt, but it doesn't seem as if as much attention is given to it today as back then.

David Jeremiah points out 3 of the basic traits of salt, he writes, "Change, preserve, and add value—three traits that Jesus may have had in mind when He said His followers were to be the salt of the earth.  Ask God today to help you be a change agent and kingdom "preservationist," and to add spiritual value to all those you meet."

As we desire to follow Christ, to "do good" we will be salt and light to those around us. Read the short passage below. Our light is to shine before others, but it is not in order to receive accolades, but it is to bring glory to God.

Many of us probably learned the song below as children.  But the message is something that we should never outgrow.  We are to shine with the love of Christ.

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
.

Won't let Satan blow it out.
I'm gonna let it shine.
Won't let Satan blow it out.
I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine
.

Let it shine til Jesus comes.
I'm gonna let it shine.
Let it shine til Jesus comes.
I'm gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Hide it under a bushel, no!
I'm gonna let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel, no!
I'm gonna let it shine, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Blessings,
Mike

Salt and Light

13 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
