Verse of the Day 8/14

John 1:4-5  In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  English Standard Version (ESV)

As I reviewed the pictures from my couple of days in Yosemite National Park last weekend, several of them brought Bible verses and hymns/songs to mind.  One of my favorite pictures from the trip is shown below.  The light was just coming over the top of the mountain, illuminating the valley which minutes before had been in darkness and shadows.  The granite rocks below showed no special color or brilliance without the light, but when the light of the sun shown on them while there were still shadows around them, their true beauty was manifested in the light.

Without Christ, we are in darkness and cannot reflect the light that is to shine on us and through us.  But when He opens our hearts and minds, reveals Himself to us He will be reflected in our lives and others will see it.

  1. The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin,
    The Light of the world is Jesus!
    Like sunshine at noonday, His glory shone in;
    The Light of the world is Jesus!
    • Refrain:
      Come to the light, 'tis shining for thee;
      Sweetly the light has dawned upon me;
      Once I was blind, but now I can see:
      The Light of the world is Jesus!
  2. No darkness have we who in Jesus abide;
    The Light of the world is Jesus!
    We walk in the light when we follow our Guide!
    The Light of the world is Jesus!

John 9:5As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the world [giving guidance through My word and works]."  Amplified Bible (AMP)

Are you in His light?  If so, may His Word daily guide our way through His Word and works.

John 1:4-9New Living Translation (NLT)

The Word gave life to everything that was created,[a]
    and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
    and the darkness can never extinguish it.[b]

God sent a man, John the Baptist,[c] to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
