Verse of the Day 11/27
Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. English Standard Version (ESV)
I read today's verse over the Thanksgiving holiday, as I'm sure some of you did as well. Since it references giving thanks it was probably quoted in many devotionals. The passage came up again today in my devotionals, the focus was on another verse, but when I stopped and looked up the passage, the heading for verses 12-17 was "The Christian Life". Twice in a few short verses being thankful and giving thanks are mentioned. It is to be part of who we are and what we do every day of the year, and not just to be reflected upon with a time out at Thanksgiving.
It is; or at least it can be, a sobering verse. Think about these words, "do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus" and not only that "giving thanks" to Him in everything, every circumstance. How many things are there in our lives that we can actually say we are doing in the name of Jesus? If we are to try to do this in our own power, by our own will, we would fail. But thanks to God that we have someone to lead us, to guide us every step of the way, each and every day.
I'll quote the Fanny Crosby hymn, "All the Way My Savior Leads Me".
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His faithful mercies?
Who through life has been my guide
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort
Ere by faith in Him to dwell
For I know whate'er fall me

Read the passage below, may we go out and live "The Christian Life" today, being thankful and giving thanks to God the Father in the name of and being led by the Lord Jesus, His Son.

12 Therefore, God's chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.14 Above all, put on love—the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of the Messiah, to which you were also called in one body, control your hearts. Be thankful. 16 Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
15-17 Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ—the Message—have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives—words, actions, whatever—be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
