Verse of the Day 11/6

Verse of the Day 11/6

Colossians 3:1-2  If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.   English Standard Version (ESV)

Today is an election day and people in our country will be voting, perhaps in record numbers, on the people who will lead them, particularly in the House and Senate.  A lot of people's minds will be focused on the news, the exit polls and from many outlets to try to get an idea of how the vote is going.  But in the scheme of things, while the vote is important, as Christians we have to keep in mind that God is saying "I've got this".  He is in control no matter how "the vote" goes.  We are to keep our minds our eyes focused on Him.

Those thoughts should carry over to our speech as well.  Each side of the political landscape will be throwing barbs at one another (or worse).  But we are never going to "win over" the other side by name calling and slanderous talk, accusations and falsehoods.  We, as Christians must do our part to keep our focus and to deal respectfully with anyone we meet, in any conversations in order to set and example and perhaps change the tone, even if it is just in that one conversation.

I like the way The Message paraphrase sums it up in verse 2:

"Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective."

Instead of shuffling along and fretting over the election, let us "look up" to what Christ is doing, see where the action is and join Him, seeing things from His perspective.

Colossians 3:1-2 The Message (MSG)

He Is Your Life

1-2 So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective.
