Verse of the Day 1/17

Verse of the Day 1/17

Romans 15:13 Now may God, the inspiration and fountain of hope, fill you to overflowing with uncontainable joy and perfect peace as you trust in him. And may the power of the Holy Spirit continually surround your life with his super-abundance until you radiate with hope! The Passion Translation (TPT)

The first 11 chapters of the book of Romans is filled with doctrine, the truths of scripture. Then in chapter 12 through to the end of the letter, the Apostle Paul applies those doctines to living life as a Christian, as a Christ follower.

In verses 4 to 13 of this chapter Paul tells us what we receive from God's Word, hope that can be applied in our lives. Yesterday, from Matthew 11 we considered how we are to come to Jesus with our burdens in order to receive refreshment as an oasis in the desert. That refreshment and the peace referenced in today's verse are rooted in hope.

In the ESV (below), the verse begins by referring to God as the God of hope. We have been taught that God is love, which is true, but it is not complete. Hope in God and the love of God go together, they cannot be separated.

The Passion Translation says that out of his "super-abundance" we may radiate, with hope, the ESV say that we "abound in hope". Abounding has to to with abundance that overflows. It flows into our hearts and minds and overflows to others.

My hope and prayer for you today is from this verse, may the God of hope "fill you to overflowing with uncontainable joy and perfect peace as you trust in him."

Do you want to see what that looks like? Our son Jeff has said "hope is my favorite thing to have". Take a look at the picture, he radiates hope.

Blessings,

Mike

Romans 15:4-13 English Standard Version (ESV)

4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles
8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written,

"Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles,
and sing to your name."
10 And again it is said,

"Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people."
11 And again,

"Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles,
and let all the peoples extol him."
12 And again Isaiah says,

"The root of Jesse will come,
even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
in him will the Gentiles hope."
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
