Verse of the Day 1/19

Verse of the Day 1/19

Proverbs 4:20-21 My son, be attentive to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Let them not escape from your sight;
keep them within your heart. English Standard Version (ESV)

In the book of Proverbs wisdom calls out to us. This wisdom comes from God and as His followers, His children, we are called to be attentive to His words; to lean in and listen closely; keep them in front of us; to know them and believe them.

The difference between knowing and believing is seen in how we act. If we truly believe what we read and how God speaks to us as we do, it will bring our actions in line with it. We can wear tee shirts with Bible verses or phrases on them or put bumper stickers on our cars, but the true measure of who we are will be seen in our actions.

A.W. Tozer writes, "Your baptism and your confirmation and your name on the church roll and the big Bible you carry—these are not the things that are important to God. You can train a chimpanzee to carry a Bible. Every one of us is the sum of what we secretly admire, what we think about and what we would like to do most if we became free to do what we wanted to do." Faith Beyond Reason, 96

Read the passage below, take not of the verbs, the action words. "Listen carefully; pay attention; fill your thoughts; unwrap His words: guard your hearts; pay attention; and avoid dishonesty with yourself.

You may try to guard your heart on your own, but the best way is to do it with God's Word, keep it before you and in your mind and let them "penetrate deep into your heart", "into the very core of your being".

Proverbs 7:3 Treasure my instructions, and cherish them within your heart. The Passion Translation (TPT)

Proverbs 4:20-24. The Passion Translation (TPT)

Healing Words
20 Listen carefully, my dear child, to everything that I teach you,
and pay attention to all that I have to say.
21 Fill your thoughts with my words
until they penetrate deep into your spirit.[a]
22 Then, as you unwrap my words,[b]
they will impart true life and radiant health
into the very core of your being.
23 So above all, guard the affections of your heart,[c]
for they affect all that you are.
Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being,
for from there flows the wellspring of life.
24 Avoid dishonest speech and pretentious words.
Be free from using perverse words no matter what!
