Verse of the Day 9/22

Verse of the Day 9/22

2 Peter 1:3-4 By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world's corruption caused by human desires.  New Living Translation (NLT)

You have probably often heard advertisements for a product that gives you "everything you need" to perform certain tasks.  You have a basic product and then various other attachments necessary to perform a variety of functions.  But have you ever purchased a product, especially a kids toy that says "batteries not included"?  It may have everything you need but without batteries there is no power to do what it is supposed to.

Thankfully, in our lives, God, the creator of the universe; supplies everything we need including the power to do so.  He has given us His great and precious promises.  Can you think of some of the promises that He has blessed you with?  Eternal life, hope, peace, love, joy to name a few?

Charles Spurgeon writes, "But besides meditating upon the promises, seek in your soul to receive them as being the very words of God. Speak to your soul thus, "If I were dealing with a man's promise, I would carefully consider the ability and the character of the man who had covenanted with me. So with the promise of God; my eye must not be so much fixed upon the greatness of the promise--that may stagger me; as upon the greatness of the Promiser--that will cheer me.

These promises aren't just ordinary promises that we hear every day, they are the very words of the Almighty God and they are for us.  Read the short passage below, He's given us all we need to live the Christian life and by trusting in His Word and acting upon His promises much more can be added to our lives.  The list of things that Peter mentions are very similar to the fruit of the Spirit that Paul writes of in Galatians 5:22-24.

2 Peter 1:3-8 New King James Version (NKJV)

as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the [a]corruption that is in the world through lust.

Fruitful Growth in the Faith

But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control [b]perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither [c]barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
