Verse of the Day 5/10

Psalm 18:1-2 I love You, Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock,
my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my mountain where I seek refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold.  Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

Last week we considered how we are challenged to "broaden our shield and sharpen our swords".  Reading today's verses I was reminded of that and how David exemplified that in his life.  It starts with the acknowledgement in verse 1 that the Lord is his strength, it is not in and of himself.

In verse two we find several military metaphors where David sees God as his Divine Warrior in both an offensive and defensive manner.  The Lord is his Rock, strong, immoveable, He is a fortress, impenetrable by the enemy, the stronghold, the first and last line of defense.  He also takes the offensive as a deliverer.  David was known for great victories over Goliath and the Philistines.  There were times however when he got out ahead of the Lord, ahead of himself.  It was at these times that the Lord was the Deliverer, He rescued him from danger and brought him back to the fold.

Think of what the Lord is to you in your life.  Has He been your rock, your fortress, your strength?  Can you look back at times in your life when He has been your Deliverer?  When you need Him, He's standing by.  I'm reminded of the Rich Mullins song "My Deliverer is Standing By".

He will never break His promise
He has written it upon the sky

My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by
My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by

I will never doubt His promise
Though I doubt my heart, I doubt my eyes

My deliverer is coming, my deliverer is standing by

In Christ,
Mike

Psalm 18

Praise for Deliverance

For the choir director. Of the servant of the Lord, David, who spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

I love You, Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock,
my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my mountain where I seek refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold.
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I was saved from my enemies.
