Ephesians 6:16-17 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, English Standard Version (ESV)
During a presentation at a sales meeting a co-worker stated that in order to succeed and grow we must "broaden our shields and sharpen our swords". Wise words for the competitive business environment for the day. It involves shoring up our defenses and being prepared to take the offensive.
Immediately, as these words were spoken I thought of the spiritual armor spoken of in this passage in Ephesians 6. It starts with being strong in the Lord and the power of His might (v10), not being strong and secure in our own abilities as Christians. As stated in the hymn "A Mighty Fortress", "He must win the battle".
How we broaden our shield and sharpen our swords is indicated in these verses, it is taking up and applying the Word of God. Standing on His promises we cannot fail.
Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.
Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I'm standing on the promises of God.
May we put on the full armor today, broaden our shield and sharpen our swords, standing on the promises of God.
Blessings,
Mike

Ephesians 6:10-18
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Whole Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,
