Verse of the Day 5/27

James 2:10  For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.   English Standard Version (ESV)

Most of us have probably had the experience of breaking a window.  Not just cracking it, but having it shattered.  Perhaps the best example is that of a car side window.  When they break, they normally shatter in a thousand pieces.  There is no way to put it back together.
Reading today's verse in the ESV, the words that jumped out at me were "has become accountable".  We may have areas of our lives where we are in control and wouldn't sin.  However, we all have weaknesses, and have sinned.  These sins have the same effect on our relationship with God without Christ, it has been shattered.  John MacArthur writes, "The law of God is not like a series of detached injunctions but a basic unity that requires perfect love of Him and our neighbors.  Although all sins are not equally damaging or heinous, that all shatter that unity and render men as transgressors, much like hitting a window with a hammer at only one point will shatter and destroy the whole window."

We have all "shattered" the window.   Romans 3:23 comes to mind.  Thankfully,  Jesus took our sins and put them on His account, redeeming us to be His own and we have Romans 3:24 to look at.  While we can't put the pieces back together in our relationship, Jesus Christ can.

Romans 3:21-24  But in our time something new has been added. What Moses and the prophets witnessed to all those years has happened. The God-setting-things-right that we read about has become Jesus-setting-things-right for us. And not only for us, but for everyone who believes in him. For there is no difference between us and them in this. Since we've compiled this long and sorry record as sinners (both us and them) and proved that we are utterly incapable of living the glorious lives God wills for us, God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we're in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.  The Message (MSG)

In Christ,
Mike

James 2:9-11

English Standard Version (ESV)

But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
