Verse of the Day 1/18

Through the Bible - Genesis 43-45, Romans 15:1-13

Good morning,
Yesterday's verse teaches us that if we are to be transformed, changed, it is something that happens from the inside out, it starts with the renewing of the mind.  We should keep that in mind as we spend time looking at some other verses from Romans 12 this week.  The heading for the passage is "Behave Like a Christian" in the NKJV and "Marks of the True Christian" in the ESV.

We'll start with verses 9 and 10, I'll post it in the ESV and The Message.

Romans 12:9-10 (English Standard Version)  9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor

Romans 12:9-10 (The Message)   9-10Love from the center of who you are; don't fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.

Love is the foundation, it is to be genuine, not fake.  It comes from our core the center of who we are.  It is a steadfast, loyal love.  We are to love one another with this kind of love.  It is not something that comes naturally, it comes from a renewed heart a renewed mind, one that first of all loves God.

The ESV in verse 10 says "outdo one another in showing honor".  Most of us must admit that we like to be honored, whether it be as a parent, in school, the workplace or as a friend.  The verse encourage us to 'outdo' one another in this, not looking for equality, but trying to outdo the other person in showing honor, respect.  Do you want to make a difference?  Try outdoing someone in honor today.

Matthew 22:37-39 (English Standard Version)  And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Blessings,
Mike

Romans 12:9-18 (The Message)

9-10Love from the center of who you are; don't fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.

11-13Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.

14-16Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they're happy; share tears when they're down. Get along with each other; don't be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don't be the great somebody.

17-19Don't hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you've got it in you, get along with everybody. Don't insist on getting even; that's not for you to do. "I'll do the judging," says God. "I'll take care of it."
