Verse of the Day 9/14

Verse of the Day 9/14

Ecclesiastes 4:11-12 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)  Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm? 12 And if somebody overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.

This is another one of those mornings where I had a verse planned for the day but due to circumstances had a change of plans.  In the past 24 hours I heard news of two friends who had been diagnosed with serious medical issues.  I was in the middle of reading this chapter in Ecclesiastes when my wife Jean called to give me the latest update.

When going through medical emergencies and trials it is very easy to feel alone.  It is at times like these when we need to band together and support our friends and family going through these circumstances.  When I read these verses I immediately thought of prayer.  Prayers that had already been offered with the promise of more to follow.

In a book of the Bible that deals with vanity, these are a couple of verses that are rock solid.  Matthew Henry's commentary states, " let us improve our opportunities of Christian fellowship. In these things all is not vanity, though there will be some alloy as long as we are under the sun. Where two are closely joined in holy love and fellowship, Christ will by his Spirit come to them; then there is a threefold cord."

If you know someone that is in need of support, be one of those strands, show some support.  Say a prayer and if you have the opportunity, make a phone call, send a text, a tweet, an e-mail or facebook post letting them know that you are thinking of them, praying for them and joining them in calling on God for them.

I would ask you to say a prayer for two friends of ours Terri and Jon this morning.  As The Message (below) puts it.  I'm rounding you up to be part of  one of those strands.

Blessings,
Mike

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12The Message (MSG)

9-10 It's better to have a partner than go it alone.
Share the work, share the wealth.
And if one falls down, the other helps,
But if there's no one to help, tough!

11 Two in a bed warm each other.
   Alone, you shiver all night.

 12 By yourself you're unprotected.
With a friend you can face the worst.
Can you round up a third?
   A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped
