Verse of the Day 1/19

Colossians 1:29  To do this, I work and struggle, using Christ's great strength that works so powerfully in me.  New Century Version (NCV)

You'll hear many people say that they are going to the gym for   "workout".  Professional sports teams will have team work outs.  What is it exactly that they are trying to "work out".  It is a term used for exercising, perhaps strenuous exercise with a purpose in mind.  For the individual it may be to be more physically fit, increase muscle tone our burn off calories and fat.  The sports teams work on plays, things that they've learned and want to put into practice to improve their game.  The result will largely depend upon what effort is put into the workouts, perhaps some heavy lifting.

What kind efforts do we put into our spiritual workouts?  Do we go through the motions, or do we work hard on dropping bad habits, things that get in the way of us leading more productive Christian lives while putting a new game plan  into place?

Today's verse is a reminder that it won't come easy, it may be a struggle, but also reminds us that  we are not on our own, we have the power of Christ that "works so powerfully" in us, working out our salvation.

J.R. Miller writes, "Through personal efforts, each must win his way through temptations, struggles and difficulties--to all noble attainments. The help of God is given in cooperation with our aspiration and energy. While God works in us--we are to work out our own salvation."
"Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" Philippians 2:12

In Christ,
Mike
