Verse of the Day 5/1

Verse of the Day 5/1

Philippians 4:6-7  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  New King James Version (NKJV)

Yesterday we considered in James 1:17 how every good and perfect gift comes from above and I focused on the gifts of loved ones, of family and other things.  The song I referenced, "Great is Thy Faithfulness" draws our attention to other perfect gives - His great faithfulness, mercy, and love to which I would add hope, which, while not actually stated in the verse, is at the foundation of what the peace that is mentioned is founded on.

Today is the National Day of Prayer and for me the verse is fitting, calling for us to not be anxious for anything, but to pray with thanksgiving and make our requests, those of our hopes, be made to God.

These verses are also special to me because I would have to say that they are my son Jeffrey's life verses.  Through God's great faithfulness, mercy and love, through all that he has been through, he has and will tell you he has "the peace that passeth understanding".  This, in spite of being disabled from a car accident at 16, after which the doctors told us that he would never walk or talk again.  Jeff regained his speech and with it continues to praise God, louder than anyone else I know, sharing his peace that passes understanding.

Today, pray for our nation, pray for your family and pray that we all would access this peace that passes understanding in our lives and in our nation.

Blessings,
Mike

Philippians 4:6-9

The Message (MSG)
6-7 Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.
8-9 Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.
