Verse of the Day 5/28

Verse of the Day 5/28

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. English Standard Version (ESV)

As you've probably noticed recently I've been quoting A.W. Tozer a lot.  I have been reading a couple of pages a day from "The Best of Tozer" as put together by Warren Wiersbe.  Today's reading made me think of today's verse, especially the "thoughts and intentions of the heart".

Tozer writes, "The Bible has a great deal to say about our thoughts; current evangelicalism has practically nothing to say about them.  The reason the Bible says so much is that our thoughts are vitally important to us….. Our voluntary thoughts not only reveal what we are, they predict what we will become…. Thinking stirs feeling and feeling triggers action.  That is the way we are made and we may as well accept it…. Anyone who wishes to check on his true spiritual condition may do so by noting what his voluntary thoughts have been over the last few hours and days."

Sobering words, literally we are what we think, which begs the question what do we find ourselves thinking about?  Spending time in God's Word and in prayer about it will reveal the condition of our heart.  If we are shying away from or neglecting it, we may be just trying to hide from being convicted; sifted and analyzed (AMP) by what the "two edged sword reveals".
Isaiah 26:3  You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You. Amplified Bible (AMP)

Hebrews 4:12-14

Amplified Bible (AMP)
12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the [a]breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.
13 And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do.
14 Inasmuch then as we have a great High Priest Who has [already] ascended and passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith in Him].
