Verse of the Day 1/11

Verse of the Day 1/11

Colossians 2:6-7English Standard Version (ESV)

Alive in Christ

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.   English Standard Version (ESV)

Yesterday I quoted from the hymn "Day by Day" and with each passing day, strength I find to face my trials here.  That trusting is walking, being rooted and built up in him, established in the faith as we see in today's verse from Paul in Colossians 2.

My daily Old Testament reading just brought me through Jeremiah (the "weeping" prophet") and into Lamentations, which, as the name implies is a lament as the prophet deals with the peoples' rejection of God and how heavy it is upon his heart.  In the middle of this lament, we have a couple of the most hopeful and encouraging realities of God's love and faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;[a]

    his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.   English Standard Version (ESV)

Out of those verses grew the hymn "Great is Thy Faithfulness".  It is a hymn that we sang every time that I participated in a jail ministry back in Illlinois.  It is a reminder of how God is faithful even when we are not.  I'd like to point to the last stanza that I have posted below and especially the lines "strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow."  It brings us back to what the hymn writer had in mind yesterday, in Him "strength I find to meet my trials here."

"Great is Thy faithfulness," O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
  "Great is Thy faithfulness!" "Great is Thy faithfulness!"
  Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
    "Great is Thy faithfulness," Lord, unto me!

3
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Colossians 2:6-10New Living Translation (NLT)

Freedom from Rules and New Life in Christ

And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Don't let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers[a] of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.[b] 10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
