Verse of the Day 11/1

Verse of the Day 11:1

Luke 6:27-28  "But if you will listen, I say to you, love your enemies and do something wonderful[a] for them in return for their hatred. 28 When someone curses you, bless that person in return. When you are mistreated and harassed by others, accept it as your mission to pray for them.   The Passion Translation (TPT)

For years, when I've read the Bible I've used study Bibles that contain notes that help to understand better what God's Word says.  When leading a Bible study I like to have commentaries available for the same reason and to be better prepared to lead a discussion.  When I read today's verses in my study Bible there were no notes or comments for them.   This should tell us that they need no more explanation; tthey are straightforward; you can take them as they are word for word.

The Passion Translation says "love your enemies and do something wonderful for them in return for their hatred."  Talk about being counter cultural.  When you watch the news you would be hard pressed to see that being put into action.  But what about in our churches and even in our homes, not in relation to enemies; but perhaps when we have a disagreement with someone and we may feel upset or hurt.  What is our natural reaction?  If we take the advice of these verses we should respond in love and do something wonderful for them.

Think about the verbs in these verses, the action items - "do" something wonderful; "bless" that person; "pray" for them.  We may head off into the day knowing that there will be confrontations on any number of levels.  Before you head out; prepare and commit to doing something wonderful; blessing someone and praying for the people that you'll be interacting with, even if they are an "enemy".

Luke 6:36   Show mercy and compassion for others, just as your heavenly Father overflows with mercy and compassion for all."  The Passion Translation (TPT)

Luke 6:27-36 New King James Version (NKJV)

Love Your Enemies

27 "But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

32 "But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, [a]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
