Verse of the Day 12/5

1 John 4:9  In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Today's verse came from the read through the Bible plan that I am following.   It was the last passage that I read in my devotions this morning and it came full circle with other passages I had read.  I had started off with a devotional from Isaiah chapter 9 where we read:

For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6  English Standard Version (ESV)

This verse brought me to perhaps the most familiar verse in the Bible, John 3:16 which starts out with "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son" and that in believing in Him we receive the gift of eternal life.

Yesterday I wrote that Jesus is truly the gift that keeps on giving.  Of this verse Pastor Greg Laurie writes, " from earth's perspective, unto us a child is born.  That is what we celebrate at Christmas.  But from heaven's perspective, unto us a Son is given.  The Father sent the Son.  He did this because He loves all of us, because He wants us to have the ultimate gift: the gift of eternal life.  It's the only gift that keeps on giving."

If you have received the "ultimate gift" of Jesus, spend some time today thinking of what it means that "we might live through Him".   Meditate on how He is Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and your Prince of Peace in your life.  As you do so may you confirm in your heart that this gift is love, it has and will keep on giving.

In Christ,
Mike

Eph 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace  NIV

1 John 4:8-10

English Standard Version (ESV)

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
