Verse of the Day 3/2

Verse of the Day 3/2

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 "And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?   English Standard Version (ESV)

For today's verses we'll continue in the book of Deuteronomy and the passages where God, through Moses calls His people  to "walk in His way".  The theme is the same in each of the passages but there are slight variations.  Yesterday it involved staying and not straying, not veering off to the right or to the left.  Today's verses reveal the heart that is vital to following.  We are called to love Him and serve Him with all of our heart and soul.

Taking a closer look at the verses Moses actually lists five basic requirements.  Fear the Lord your God-  revere, honor, respect and submit to Him.  Walk in His ways - live our lives according to His plan as outlined in His Word, and for us today as modeled by Jesus life in the New Testament.  Love Him - set your heart on Him, put no other gods before Him.   Serve the Lord your God - this involves worship, not just on Sunday, a life of worship, serving Him doing what He would have us do.  Keep the commandments... of the Lord -  obey Him, doing the things required of us, picture the obedient child.

Read the Message below.  Perhaps His Message for us is the same as it was for Moses "Now get going.  Lead your people."   Those people could be family,  friends, study group members but the important thing is to lead with those five basic requirements evident in our lives.

12-13  what do you think God expects from you? Just this: Live in his presence in holy reverence, follow the road he sets out for you, love him, serve God, your God, with everything you have in you, obey the commandments and regulations of God that I'm commanding you today—live a good life.  The Message

Deuteronomy 10:11-18The Message (MSG)

11 God told me, "Now get going. Lead your people as they resume the journey to take possession of the land that I promised their ancestors that I'd give to them."

12-13 So now Israel, what do you think God expects from you? Just this: Live in his presence in holy reverence, follow the road he sets out for you, love him, serve God, your God, with everything you have in you, obey the commandments and regulations of God that I'm commanding you today—live a good life.

14-18 Look around you: Everything you see is God's—the heavens above and beyond, the Earth, and everything on it. But it was your ancestors who God fell in love with; he picked their children—that's you!—out of all the other peoples. That's where we are right now. So cut away the thick calluses from your heart and stop being so willfully hardheaded. God, your God, is the God of all gods, he's the Master of all masters, a God immense and powerful and awesome. He doesn't play favorites, takes no bribes, makes sure orphans and widows are treated fairly, takes loving care of foreigners by seeing that they get food and clothing.
