Verse of the Day 3/7

Verse of the Day 3/7

Psalm 146:5-6  Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,

    whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
    the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;   English Standard Version (ESV)

I read these verses in my devotions this morning and they made me pause.  We've recently considered prayer from many angles recently but these verses go back to the core of it.   How blessed we are to be able to go to, to approach God, the creator of the universe who "hung  the stars in place" and controls the waves of the sea.  In Psalm 8 David is taken back by this thought, "what is man that you are mindful of him".  But He is and we should feel blessed because of it.

He created all there is and set  things in motion.  The sun revolves around it's access once every 24 hours, the moon orbits the earth every 27.3 days and the earth  orbits around the sun every 365.26 days.  But God is not a watchmaker who made the watch, wound it up and just let it go.  He is involved and in control of the details every minute, every hour of every day.

The reference to Jacob, the one who "wrestled with God and prevailed", makes me think of how involved God is in each of our lives.  He doesn't need to wrestle with us, He could just let us go, let us do our thing, or He could crush us anytime He wanted to.  But He created us to have a relationship with us, to love us, forever.

    Jesus my Lord will love me forever,
    From Him no pow'r of evil can sever,
    He gave His life to ransom my soul,
    Now I belong to Him;
      Chorus
      Now I belong to Jesus, Jesus belongs to me,
      Not for the years of time alone, But for eternity.
I like the way The Message begins the passage (below), "Don't put your life in the hands of experts who know nothing of life", instead put your life in the hands  of the God of Jacob, who created all there is yet cares for, provides for and loves you.

Psalm 146:5-9The Message (MSG)

3-9 Don't put your life in the hands of experts
    who know nothing of life, of salvation life.
Mere humans don't have what it takes;
    when they die, their projects die with them.
Instead, get help from the God of Jacob,
    put your hope in God and know real blessing!
God made sky and soil,
    sea and all the fish in it.
He always does what he says—
    he defends the wronged,
    he feeds the hungry.
God frees prisoners—
    he gives sight to the blind,
    he lifts up the fallen.
God loves good people, protects strangers,
    takes the side of orphans and widows,
    but makes short work of the wicked.
