Verse of the Day 3/3

Verse of the Day 3/3

Deuteronomy 13:4 You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.   English Standard Version (ESV)

In these first few days of Lent we've been going through verses in the book of Deuteronomy that have been dealing with our "daily walk".  We'll continue with that theme today as we turn to chapter 13.  Today's verse lists six actions that should be present in our life.  We are to "walk after the Lord"- following Him intently, not casually.   We are to"fear Him" - show honor, respect and reverence for who He is.  We are to "keep His commandments" - obedience, being imitators of Jesus should be our goal.  Obey "His voice" - be listening for when He calls, ready to "serve Him" - it goes along with obedience, but it is in an effort to please Him, bring Him honor, glory and joy. We are to "hold fast" to Him - cling to Him with the attitude of not letting go.

You may not hear the audible "voice of God" but if you are reading, following and listening to His word, if you are active in praying to Him, the Holy Spirit will guide and direct you, prompt you to do things with that "still small voice" that can be detected and heard amidst of the din of all the other voices in our society.  It should also be noted that we are to be looking or listening for it, expecting to hear a message or a prompting from God.  We are to listen and believe the voice of truth.

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I'm in
Onto the crashing waves
To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He's holding out His hand
But the waves are calling out my name
And they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I've tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. "Boy, you'll never win!"
"You'll never win!"
But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
The voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth   (Voice of Truth - Casting Crowns)

What voice will you listen and respond to today?  May we filter out all those other voices and choose to "listen and believe the voice of truth".

Deuteronomy 13:1-4The Message (MSG)

13 1-4 When a prophet or visionary gets up in your community and gives out a miracle-sign or wonder, and the miracle-sign or wonder that he gave out happens and he says, "Let's follow other gods" (these are gods you know nothing about), "let's worship them," don't pay any attention to what that prophet or visionary says. God, your God, is testing you to find out if you totally love him with everything you have in you. You are to follow only God, your God, hold him in deep reverence, keep his commandments, listen obediently to what he says, serve him—hold on to him for dear life!
