Verse of the Day 11/12

Verse of the Day 11/12

Jeremiah 9:23-24  Thus says the Lord: "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, 24 but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord."   English Standard Version (ESV)

Today's verses came from the last passage that I read this morning in the Old Testament portion of my devotions.  The passage had to deal with God's judgment and was given in a time of sorrow, a time where the nation should have been mourning and repenting.  People were seeking leadership, someone to deliver them and would be quick to turn to someone that would rally them.

I went to look for notes in my study Bible but there were relatively few, except that Paul referred to the verses a couple of times in the New Testament where he said "Let the one who boasts , boast in the Lord".  The reason that there aren't many notes on the passage is because it is so straightforward, it is simple, it is true and it is of utmost importance.

Much of our society claims that they are seeking justice but it doesn't come by kneeling on the sidelines.  It comes from seeking God and living a life that testifies that it "knows and understands who God is", in Him is steadfast love, justice and in following Him and His way of life as found in the Sermon on the Mount in the gospels in Matthew 5-7 and that living this way of life is how to truly turn things around, including loving your neighbor as yourself.

What is it that you or I boast about today?  If you haven't done so for a while, "ponder anew what the Amighty can do" and boast about that today.

1
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
  the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy
  health and salvation!
    All ye who hear,
Now to His temple draw near;
Sing now in glad adoration!

4
Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper
  thy work and defend thee,
Who from the heavens the streams of
  His mercy doth send thee.
    Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
Who with His love doth befriend thee.
5
Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that
  is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come
  now with praises before Him!
    Let the Amen
Sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him

Jeremiah 9:23-26The Message (MSG)

23-24 God's Message:

"Don't let the wise brag of their wisdom.
Don't let heroes brag of their exploits.
Don't let the rich brag of their riches.
If you brag, brag of this and this only:
That you understand and know me.
I'm God, and I act in loyal love.
I do what's right and set things right and fair,
and delight in those who do the same things.
These are my trademarks."
    God's Decree.

25-26 "Stay alert! It won't be long now"—God's Decree!—"when I will personally deal with everyone whose life is all outside but no inside: Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab. All these nations are big on performance religion—including Israel, who is no better."
