Verse of the Day 2/8

Verse of the Day 2/8

Matthew 24:42  Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.   English Standard Version (ESV)

Today's verse came up in the read through the New Testament plan that I follow.  It speaks of being prepared, being ready for we don't know the hour or the day when Jesus will return or call us home.

My wife Jean had seen a post about the "death clock", I believe on facebook.  The premise was that if you keyed in the required information, including family history, it would give you a reading as to how long you should expect to live.  Hers came out to 79. It is all well and good, and some fun for discussion, but we both go along with today's verse.  No one knows the hour or the day.  Just because parents and grandparents may have lived to 85 or 95 doesn't mean that we will.  Theologian Francis Schaeffer put it another way: "Life is like a clock with no hands. It's ticking but you never know when it's going to strike midnight."

The length of life is not the main emphasis of the passage.  It is more about how we live each day.  We are to be ready, to be prepared for the day of His return and live our lives accordingly.

You've probably heard someone say that they're ready "to meet their maker".  It is a sobering thing but it is a reality.  Some day we will all meet our maker.  May we all be ready when He calls.

Matthew 24:37-44 New Living Translation (NLT)

37 "When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah's day. 38 In those days before the flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat.39 People didn't realize what was going to happen until the flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes.

40 "Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding flour at the mill; one will be taken, the other left.

42 "So you, too, must keep watch! For you don't know what day your Lord is coming. 43 Understand this: If a homeowner knew exactly when a burglar was coming, he would keep watch and not permit his house to be broken into. 44 You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.
