Verse of the Day 12/1

Verse of the Day 12/1

Psalm 148:1,9-10

1Praise the Lord.[a]

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights above.

you mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    small creatures and flying birds,    New International Version (NIV)

On Friday, when many people were hitting the malls for the "hot deals" on Black Friday, I had the opportunity to spend a good part of the day in the woods while hunting.  Out before sunrise I heard the world come to life.  I couldn't believe how many different birds that I heard singing, from Blue Jays, Cardinals, Grosbeaks, Red Headed Woodpeckers and more.  There were also what seemed to be a hundred squirrels scurrying around the leaves making all kinds of racket.  All of them seemed to be enjoying life and if they could put things in words they would have been praising God.

As these thoughts came back to mind in the middle of the night an old hymn came to mind, "All Creatures of Our God and King".  Here are the stanzas.

1 All creatures of our God and King,
lift up your voice and with us sing
alleluia, alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
thou silver moon with softer gleam,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

2 Thou rushing wind that art so strong,
ye clouds that sail in heav'n along,
O praise him, alleluia!
Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,
ye lights of evening, find a voice,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

3 Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
make music for thy Lord to hear,
alleluia, alleluia!
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
that givest man both warmth and light,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

4 And all ye men of tender heart,
forgiving others, take your part,
O sing ye, alleluia!
Ye who long pain and sorrow bear,
praise God and on him cast your care,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

5 Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship him in humbleness,
O praise him, alleluia!
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, three in one.
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

The hymn was written by St. Francis of Assisi in 1225.  Hymnary.org stated this about him.   "St. Francis of Assisi is universally known for preaching to the birds and urging them to praise God. But his whole life was one of service to God and humanity. The son of a wealthy cloth merchant, Francis led a carefree, adventurous life as a youth, but after an illness and a pilgrimage to Rome in 1205, he voluntarily began a traveling life of poverty. He restored run-down chapels and shrines, preached, sang devotional "laudi spirituali" (adapted from Italian folk songs), and helped the poor and the lepers."

As we begin the Advent Season and look forward to celebrating Christmas we will hear plenty of Christmas hymns and carols praising God.  As we hear them may we join in singing, making a joyful noise to the Lord as do all of His creatures in the field, forest and skies.

Psalm 148:1-12 New King James Version (NKJV)

Praise to the Lord from Creation

148 Praise[a] the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights!
Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts!
Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!
Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For He commanded and they were created.
He also established them forever and ever;
He made a decree which shall not pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
You great sea creatures and all the depths;
Fire and hail, snow and clouds;
Stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
Mountains and all hills;
Fruitful trees and all cedars;
10 Beasts and all cattle;
Creeping things and flying fowl;
11 Kings of the earth and all peoples;
Princes and all judges of the earth;
12 Both young men and maidens;
Old men and children.
