Verse of the Day 1/10

Verse of the Day 1/10

Matthew 6:33-34
English Standard Version

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

The heading for this passage (verses 25-34 below) in my English Standard Version Bible is "Do Not Be Anxious".  In our society today, anxiety is a big problem, it can cause many kinds of health problems and left unchecked can shorten our lives.  How many sleepless nights to we have, how much time do we spend "fretting" not only about "big things" but also some of the mundane things in our lives that the passage mentions, what shall we eat and what shall we wear?

The verses are a reminder that when we put God first, He will take care of the rest, day by day.  We need not look too far down the road, next month or next year, let God take care of you today.

John Piper writes, "we often tend to despair when we think that we may have to bear tomorrow's load on today's resources. God wants us to know: We won't. Today's mercies are for today's troubles. Tomorrow's mercies are for tomorrow's troubles. "

The old hymn Reach Out to Jesus comes to mind.  When you are anxious over your burdens, remember, reach out to Jesus, He's reaching out to you.  His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22).

Is your burden heavy as you bear it all alone?
Does the road you travel harbour danger yet unknown?
Are you growing weary in the struggle of it all?
Jesus will help you when on His name you call.

Refrain
He is always there hearing every prayer, faithful and true.
Walking by our side in His love we hide all the day through.
When you get discouraged just remember what to do,
Reach out to Jesus He's reaching out to you.

Lamentations 3:22-23
English Standard Version

22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
      his mercies never come to an end;
23 they are new every morning;
    great is your faithfulness.

Blessings,
Mike

Matthew 6:25-34
English Standard Version

Do Not Be Anxious

25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
