Verse of the Day 1/3

Verse of the Day 1/3

Jeremiah 2:12-13
English Standard Version

12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this;
    be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,
13 for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
    the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
    broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Yesterday, we considered how it would be a good thing to "number our days", to do good and to make each day count. We cannot do this on our own but we draw from the Holy Spirit, the Counselor who comes alongside us to guide us.  Today's verses out of the Old Testament give us a warning about trying to do things on our own and relying on our own resources.  Notice that the prophet points out 2 evils, forsaking God and His teachings, the "fountain of living waters" and instead investing in ourselves storing for the future on our own.

In John chapter 4 Jesus spoke of providing "living water" which wells up into eternal life.  It is a similar picture.  But instead of taking advantage from that well, from that spring which provides for us continually, man chooses to rely on their own works their own plans, pouring their resources into leaky buckets if you will.  Like the broken cisterns they do not hold water. What was poured in leaks out and is not there when needed.

How many of us are self reliant, financially and spiritually?  What about our nation.  Go back to verse 10, "has a nation ever changed it's gods?

May we continually draw from the living water that is offered to us and not try to make it on our own.

Blessings,
Mike

Jeremiah 2:11-13
English Standard Version

11 Has a nation changed its gods,
    even though they are no gods?
But my people have changed their glory
    for that which does not profit.
12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this;
    be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,
13 for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
    the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
    broken cisterns that can hold no water.
