Verse of the Day 3/13

Verse of the Day 3/13

Isaiah 46:3-4
English Standard Version

"Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
    all the remnant of the house of Israel,
who have been borne by me from before your birth,
    carried from the womb;
even to your old age I am he,
    and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
    I will carry and will save.

In Isaiah 46 the prophet is drawing a comparison between the Lord God Almighty and all other gods.  These other gods, whether wood or metal, must be formed, shaped, and carried by man or beast and can do nothiing for themselves, nor can they do anything for their worshippers.  Not only do they not do anything for them, they are a burden.  There is great cost in making them.

Our God, on the other hand is the God who has created us, He has carried us from our birth and will carry, bear and save us.  His work is ongoing, day by day and will continue through eternity.  The Isrealites are reminded of what He had done for them.  Deliverance from Egypt, parting of the Red Sea and the Jordan river at flood stage; bringing down the walls of Jericho, provided manna in the desert and striking down 185,000 of the Assyrians army in one night to name a few.

God is pointing out how much He has done for them while the gods that they have sunk to worshipping have done nothing and are nothing but a burden to them.  What about us? What gods have we created, things that are a money pit for us; things promising enjoyment and freedom but actually making us slaves and being a burden for us?

The verses are awake up call to His people then and now, "listen to me".  Don't turn to those gods who are nothing but a burden to you, instead; turn to the One who has carried you and will carry and sustain you, for His honor and glory.

Blessings,
Mike

Isaiah 46:1-10
English Standard Version

The Idols of Babylon and the One True God

46 Bel bows down; Nebo stoops;
    their idols are on beasts and livestock;
these things you carry are borne
    as burdens on weary beasts.
They stoop; they bow down together;
    they cannot save the burden,
    but themselves go into captivity.

"Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
    all the remnant of the house of Israel,
who have been borne by me from before your birth,
    carried from the womb;
even to your old age I am he,
    and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
    I will carry and will save.

"To whom will you liken me and make me equal,
    and compare me, that we may be alike?
Those who lavish gold from the purse,
    and weigh out silver in the scales,
hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;
    then they fall down and worship!
They lift it to their shoulders, they carry it,
    they set it in its place, and it stands there;
    it cannot move from its place.
If one cries to it, it does not answer
    or save him from his trouble.

"Remember this and stand firm,
    recall it to mind, you transgressors,
    remember the former things of old;
for I am God, and there is no other;
    I am God, and there is none like me,
10 declaring the end from the beginning
    and from ancient times things not yet done,
saying, 'My counsel shall stand,
    and I will accomplish all my purpose,'
