Verse of the Day 7/12

1 John 5:4-5 (ESV)  For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

My heart was heavy last night and this morning over concerns for family and friends that are facing all kinds of challenges in their lives.  From chronic pain, to fighting cancer, and on to financial and relational concerns.  It seems almost overwhelming.  I needed to read, to hear, to accept these verses this morning.  In all of these things (think of the end of the chapter in Romans 8) Jesus is with us, God is for us, and the Holy Spirit guides us.

We all, as Christians, have God, have Jesus for us, with us in all our struggles, all of life's challenges.  We have a heritage of being overcomers.  Think of the rich history throughout the Bible, through history and in our families how God has established us as overcomers.

John MacArthur, in the notes in my study Bible, writes "the overcomers are believers - all of them.  The word for overcomes or overcomers comes from a Greek word meaning "to conquer", to "have victory", to "have superiority", or "conquering power".  The word reflects a genuine superiority that leads to overwhelming success.  The victory is demonstrable; it involves overthrowing an enemy so that the victory is seen by all."

We need not be overwhelmed in our circumstances, we are to be overcomers, with God leading to an overwhelming victory.

Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory!
O glorious victory, that overcomes the world.

In Christ,
Mike

1 John 5:1-5 (ESV)  Overcoming the World

5  Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
