Verse of the Day 7/19

Matthew 12:19-20(ESV)  He will not quarrel or cry aloud,
    nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;
20 a bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory;

In today's verses Jesus quotes Isaiah's prophecy about Himself.  It tells of some of the qualities of the true spiritual leader, the Good Shepherd.  What a far cry it is compared to those who desire to become the leaders of our nation.
All you hear is mud slinging with venom and malice towards one another and the opposing party.
 
I'd like to share a few quotes from a political leader of another time:
 
"While others are disputing, let us be growing.  This will be the best way to convince those who you find will not be convinced any other way."
"I lose nothing by being quiet and leaving all to Him."  - George Whitefield quoted by Arnold Gallimore's biography of Whitefield.
 
Reeds sway in the wind but a bruised reed is fragile, it has been nicked or damaged and when the wind blows it will no longer bend but break.  The smoldering wick is also fragile.  The flame has gone out, only a tiny ember remains.  It won't take much to snuff it out.  Our nation is fragile at this point.  We need the kind of leader who will rekindle the flame who will allow the bruised reed to heal.
 
"With malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."  - Abraham Lincoln in his second inaugural address.
 

The leader that we need is Jesus.

Matthew 12:15-21 (ESV) God's Chosen Servant

15 Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. And many followed him, and he healed them all 16 and ordered them not to make him known. 17  This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:

18  "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
    my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
    and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel or cry aloud,
    nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;
20 a bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory;
21      and in his name the Gentiles will hope."
