Verse of the Day 11/4

Titus 3:14  And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.  English Standard Version (ESV)

Today's verse came from yesterday's read through the Bible plan.  It is a verse that I've read before many times, but in light of today's election I looked at it a little differently.

Today is election day.  Many people will be zealous for their candidates, doing whatever they can to try to help get their candidate elected.  They will be trying to "get out the vote", there will be speeches and hand shaking and some may offer meals or other assistance to encourage someone to come out and vote.

The term "our people" is what caught my attention today.  We are part of Jesus family, His team, His party if you will.  The questions for us today are how are we showing ourselves as being devoted to Him, dedicated to His cause?  The following few words in the verse give us a pretty good idea.  We are to strive and devote ourselves to doing good, which involves being willing to help those around us who are in "urgent need".  It could come in the form of a meal, a prayer, a helping hand but if we are "zealous" we will be on the lookout for opportunities.  If we are doing this in the power of the Spirit we will not be unfruitful but will accomplish what we have been called to do.

These were the final instructions that Paul wrote to Titus.  Final words are important.  Let us learn to keep "first things first" and attend to doing good.

In Christ,
Mike

Titus 3:13-15The Message (MSG)

12-13 As soon as I send either Artemas or Tychicus to you, come immediately and meet me in Nicopolis. I've decided to spend the winter there. Give Zenas the lawyer and Apollos a hearty send-off. Take good care of them.

14 Our people have to learn to be diligent in their work so that all necessities are met (especially among the needy) and they don't end up with nothing to show for their lives.

15 All here want to be remembered to you. Say hello to our friends in the faith. Grace to all of you.
