Verse of the Day 4/19

Hebrews 2:1(NIV)  We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Last year I lost 20 lbs by watching what I ate and getting exercise.  Unfortunately, over the winter I drifted from that regimen and have put  back on at least 10 of those pounds.  I decided that I wanted to lose those pounds that I had put back on, but I haven't been following the regimen.  I've been drifting.  One day eating right, one day exercising , the next day or several days not so much.  I haven't been losing the desired weight.

No one has ever gotten down to their desired weight, gotten physically fit, or achieved just about any goal by "drifting".  No one will grow and mature in their spiritual life by drifting.  As today's verse indicates, it will require that we pay attention.  Paying attention will involve following, putting into practice what we've learned while striving to learn more.  It all takes time, effort, determination and in the case of a relationship with the Lord or your spouse or children, love.

If we want a diet to be successful we will need something to keep us accountable.  For a diet it may be Weight Watchers, a spouse or friend or even a daily visit to the bathroom scale.  To be spiritually fit we need some accountability as well.  These things would include your Bible, time in prayer, involvement of Christian friends in a small group, as well as your spouse or family members.

What is your spiritual condition?  If you've been drifting it is not what is should be.

2 Peter 3:18 (NIV)  But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

Blessings,
Mike

Hebrews 2:1-4 (AMP)

1SINCE ALL this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away.

2For if the message given through angels [the Law spoken by them to Moses] was authentic and proved sure, and every violation and disobedience received an appropriate (just and adequate) penalty,

3How shall we escape [appropriate retribution] if we neglect and refuse to pay attention to such a great salvation [as is now offered to us, letting it drift past us forever]? For it was declared at first by the Lord [Himself], and it was confirmed to us and proved to be real and genuine by those who personally heard [Him speak].

4[Besides this evidence] it was also established and plainly endorsed by God, Who showed His approval of it by signs and wonders and various miraculous manifestations of [His] power and by imparting the gifts of the Holy Spirit [to the believers] according to His own will.
