Verse of the Day 4/6

1 John 3:16 (NKJV)  By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

We have all heard of; and some of us may have experienced "love at first sight".  We have all heard of, and those of us who are Christians have experienced "true love".

Yesterday I referenced John 3:16 - "for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son".  Today's verse from 1 John 3:16 explains this as what love is and means.  The NKJV starts the passage off with the heading "The Outworking of Love".  Jesus laid down His life.  If He wanted to He could have stopped the process, caved in to Satan's temptations, saved Himself and let us fend for ourselves.  Well, not really.  He was God and part of God's own perfect plan was to lay down His life for us.

There are many passages that we can go to on this Good Friday, (such as Philippians 2:5-11) but all of them revolve around this great love that Christ showed for us by going to the cross.  He had the power to lay down His life, He had the power to take it up again.  Because He did and does, He has the power to take up ours as well.

They bound the hands of Jesus in the garden where he prayed
They led him thru the streets in shame
They spat upon the savior so pure and free from sin
They said, "crucify him: he's to blame

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set him free
He could have called ten thousand angels
But he died alone, for you and me

He died alone, but He arose so that you and I could be with Him in eternity.

In Christ,
Mike

1 John 3:16-18 New King James Version (NKJV)

The Outworking of Love

16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.17 But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
