Verse of the Day 5/17

John 7:38 (ESV)  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'"

In yesterday's verse the phophet Isaiah called the people to "come to the waters".  This morning, the read through the Bible plan that I'm on brought me to John 7 where I read today's verse.  Jesus statement would not have been lost on the people.  It came at the height of the celebration of the Feast of Booths or Tabernacles where as part of the ceremony, another verse from Isaiah 12:3 would be read as water was poured out as a sacrifice at the time of the morning sacrifice.

Isaiah 12:3 (ESV) With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

Jesus was making them aware that a change was taking place.  In the future, He would be the source of their salvation and would provide for them living waters.  This water would influence and flow through them and out into the community.  They wouldn't be the living water but would be instruments, channels through which it would flow, out of their hearts in service to God.

 Have you come to Jesus for the living water?  Will you be a channel through which it flows?

How I praise Thee, precious Savior,
That Thy love laid hold of me;
Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me
That I might Thy channel be.

Refrain

Channels only, blessèd Master,
But with all Thy wondrous power
Flowing through us, Thou canst use us
Every day and every hour.

Blessings,
Mike

John 7:37-39 English Standard Version (ESV)  Rivers of Living Water

37  On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
