Verse of the Day 5/31

Verse of the Day 5/31

1 Timothy 6:10-11(NIV) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.  11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

In my devotions this morning I read Ecclesiastes 2 in which Solomon boasts in all his earthly accomplishments only to find emptiness, vanity, and realize that he had been chasing after the wind.

I'm sure that many people today who chase after wealth, fame, and pleasure at some point come to the same conclusion and realization.  Today's verses call and challenge us to run, to flee from the vain pursuits and the love of money but to focus instead on a godly life, doing the right things, having faith and love in our lives which will show in gentleness and charity towards others and endurance in life's challenges.

The reading in Ecclesiastes and 1 Timothy brought to mind the second stanza of the hymn "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross".

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ, my God;
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood
.

What is it that you can boast of today?  What charms, what do you delight in?  Is a course correction needed?

Blessings,
Mike

1 Timothy 6:6-11 (NIV)

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Final Charge to Timothy

11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness
