Verse of the Day 7/21

Verse of the Day 7/21

Psalm 86:16 Turn to me and be gracious to me;
    give your strength to your servant,
    and save the son of your maidservant.  English Standard Version (ESV)

In reading yesterday's verse, Psalm 30:10 which called on God to be our helper and today's verse calling on God to give us strength, two old hymns came to mind.  Regarding 30:16 it was "A Mighty Fortress is Our God", and in particular the line "our helper amid the flood".  Sometimes our troubles come upon us like a flood or deluge.  When we call on Him, He helps us to not only to withstand but to prevail.

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.
In today's verse, Psalm 86:16, the psalmist not only asks for strength in general but specifically His strength.  The hymn "Great is Thy Faithfulness" came to mind.  Not only is it strength today in the time of need, but it yields future rewards in hope for tomorrow, a blessing indeed.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness!" "Great is Thy faithfulness!"
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
"Great is Thy faithfulness," Lord, unto me!

Spend some time in these psalms and these hymns today.  May He be your helper and give you strength (might and inflexibility to temptation) today and for the week ahead.

In Christ,
Mike

Psalm 86:15-17

Amplified Bible (AMP)

15 But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness and truth.

16 O turn to me and have mercy and be gracious to me; grant strength (might and inflexibility to temptation) to Your servant and save the son of Your handmaiden.

17 Show me a sign of [Your evident] goodwill and favor, that those who hate me may see it and be put to shame, because You, Lord, [will show Your approval of me when You] help and comfort me.
