Verse of the Day 10/24

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then]
7 You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. Amplified Bible (AMP)
Today's verses were quoted in a recent message at our church from another translation. As I followed along I pulled up the Amplified Bible translation in my Bible Gateway app. The verses come from the Shema which through the ages have been quoted and recited daily by devout Jews and Christians. Many translations will mention the "teaching dilligently" but the Amplified does a good job of what is involved in this.
Verse 6 starts by saying that these words, God's Word are to be top priority to us. They are part of who we are, whose we are and they should be in our hearts and minds. If they have that place, the next step should follow. We will impress them on our children or the next generation of believers. These things are taught but are more effective if they are caught, if they are seen lived out in our lives. To whet has to do with preparation just as the aroma of a meal whets our appetite.
The sharepening involves honing as you would a knife, preparing it to do what it is designed to do more effectively. If this is the case it will be impressed upon that next generation. Our lives, our teaching, our example should leave a mark, make and leave a lasting impression.
Read the rest of the passage to see how this is done. It is making our thoughts of God commonplace in our lives. In our speech - the things we talk about, the music we listen to and even to the point of how we decorate our homes. All of these things will show that God is first in our hearts and in our homes.
Blessings,
Mike

Deuteronomy 6:4-9Amplified Bible (AMP)
4 Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord].
5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might.
6 And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then]
7 You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.
8 And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets (forehead bands) between your eyes.
9 And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
